An SEO audit does not need to begin with a hundred metrics. The most useful audits start with the basics: can search engines access the page, understand what it is about, and move through the site easily?
This checklist is designed for business owners, marketers and developers who want a practical first pass before investing in a deeper technical review. You can complete many of the checks with the free Markhor Global SEO tools.
1. Confirm the page can be indexed
Check that the page does not contain a noindex directive and is not blocked by robots.txt. A technically excellent page cannot rank if search engines are told not to index it.
2. Check the canonical URL
The canonical should point to the preferred version of the page. This is especially important when multiple URLs can display similar content.
3. Review the title tag
The title should clearly describe the page and match what a user would reasonably search for. Avoid vague titles and avoid forcing unrelated keywords into the same title.
4. Review the meta description
Write a concise summary that explains what the visitor will find. Google may generate a different snippet, but a useful description still gives the search engine a strong option.
5. Check the H1
Use a clear main heading that accurately describes the page. The H1 should reinforce the central topic rather than introduce a different one.
6. Review heading structure
Use H2s for major sections and H3s for supporting subsections. Headings should help people scan the page and understand its structure.
7. Check whether the content satisfies the query
A page can be technically optimized and still perform poorly if it does not answer the user’s real question. Compare the content with the search intent behind the target topic.
8. Look for thin sections
Remove filler and expand sections that leave obvious questions unanswered. Helpful content is more important than reaching an arbitrary word count.
9. Check internal links
Important pages should receive contextual links from other relevant pages. Use descriptive anchor text so users and search engines understand the destination.
10. Check for broken links
Broken internal links create poor user experiences and waste crawl paths. Fix or replace links that return errors.
11. Check redirects
Old URLs should redirect directly to the best replacement. Avoid unnecessary redirect chains and redirect loops.
12. Review image alt text
Use useful alt text when an image conveys information. Decorative images do not need keyword-stuffed descriptions.
13. Check mobile usability
Make sure text is readable, buttons are easy to tap and layouts do not overflow on smaller screens.
14. Review page performance
Slow loading can frustrate visitors. Large images, excessive scripts and heavy third-party widgets are common causes.
15. Check structured data
If the page uses JSON-LD, validate the syntax and make sure the schema accurately describes the visible page.
16. Review URL structure
URLs should be stable, readable and descriptive. Avoid changing established URLs without a clear reason and a redirect plan.
17. Confirm important pages are in the sitemap
Your XML sitemap should contain the canonical URLs you actually want indexed.
18. Check duplicate content
If multiple pages compete for the same purpose, decide whether they should be consolidated, differentiated or canonicalized.
19. Review the search snippet
Look at the page title, description and URL together. Does the result communicate a clear reason to click?
20. Build a prioritized action list
Do not fix issues randomly. Start with indexing problems, broken navigation and important commercial pages, then move to metadata and content improvements.
